Lessons and Classes
Riverside Kayak Connection offers kayaking classes year around! The descriptions below will give you an idea of what each class entails. Come prepared to have fun and get wet!
Students should bring water clothing and shoes, a towel, and a change of clothing (nose and/or ear plugs if preferred). Locker room facilities are available at the Downriver YMCA in Southgate, where the majority of these classes are offered.
Kayak, PFD (personal floatation device, and paddle will be provided for Fun Start and Next Step Kayaking Class participants. At time of registration, we will request your approximate height and weight to insure we have the proper gear for you. You are welcome to bring your own kayak and gear to the Rolling and Rolling Tune Up Classes, however, we can bring a kayak and gear for you if needed.
Please call the shop at (734) 285-2925 or sign up for our email newsletter for a list of upcoming dates and times. Class schedule is subject to location and instructor availability. Class sizes are limited and student to instructor ratio is kept low.
Fun Start Kayaking Class
Learn basic kayaking skills including the wet exit, forward and reverse strokes, getting in and out of a kayak from shore, and an introduction on how to get back in a kayak in the water. While this class is designed for the beginner, anyone who has never had formal instruction will benefit from this session. $75.00 per paddler, includes kayak and gear
Next Step Kayaking Class
This class is for paddlers who already have taken a Fun Start Kayaking Class, or are experienced paddlers looking to brush up on their skills. Participants will practice wet exits, learn assisted and self rescue techniques, and more. $75.00 per paddler, includes kayak and gear
Advanced Rescues and Towing Class
This class will take experienced kayakers beyond basic rescues and towing. Techniques taught and practiced will include, how to deal with multiple capsizing, loaded boats, and injured paddlers. This class is typically offered during the summer months in an outdoor setting. Price TBD
This class focuses on breaking down the fundamentals of rolling a capsized kayak. We will focus on the elements of hip snap development and learning the Kayak Roll. This class is designed for students with some previous instruction and kayaking experience. $80.00 w/own kayak and gear or $90.00 w/RKC kayak and gear
Rolling Tune Up Class
Get some pointers and extra help from our instructors during this class, designed for paddlers with previous rolling experience. This class is designed to help students make their existing roll more
reliable, to learn to roll on the other side and/or learn additional techniques. $70.00 w/own kayak and gear or $80.00 w/RKC kayak and gear.
