Grosse Ile Circumnavigation

The Grosse Ile Circumnavigation is an Intermediate/Advanced Paddle that will require paddling upstream for the last 8 miles.  Highlights of the largest island in the Detroit River are the Grosse Ile Lighthouse, Henry Ford’s Pagoda House, and the R.E. Olds Mansion.  At about the half way point we will stop at the Grosse Ile Yacht club for a buffet lunch.

Grosse Ile Circumnavigation

Paddling Time:  Average 6 hours and 7.5 hours of event time.

Route Classification:   Intermediate/Advanced Paddle – We will paddle for about 3 hours before the lunch break.  Take about 1 hour for the lunch break and then another 3 hours of paddling to the take out.  In the summer there is often a south wind so we frequently fight a head wind on this paddle which negates the benefit of any current.

Route:  The Grosse Ile Circumnavigation leaves from the Wyandotte Pine Street Put In  and pddles downstream to the Grosse Ile Yacht Club.  After lunch paddle upstream back to Wyandotte. Weather conditions will dictate if we will paddle downstream on the East or West side of Grosse Ile.

Requirements:    All paddlers must have a life jacket on and zipped for the duration of the paddle.  We do not allow alcoholic beverages and we will not allow anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol to paddle.  These requirements are for your safety and the safety of the group.

Minimum Age:  18 years old.

Parking:   Free parking is available along Pine Street.  Please do not park in Portofino’s parking lot.

Restrooms:   We recommend stopping before you get to the Wyandotte Pine Street Put In, there are public restrooms at the Wyandotte Shores Golf Course just south of Pine Street.

Lunch:  We will get out at the Grosse Ile Yacht Club for a Cold Cut Buffet Lunch on the patio, which is included with registration.  The Cold Cut Buffet will have assorted deli meats, cheeses, condiments, lettuce tomato, onion, bread, pasta salad, tea, lemonade, cookies and brownies.  If you would like a different beverage they can be purchased with a credit card, the club does not accept cash for food or drinks.
