Port Austin Kayak Symposium Things to Know

RKC 2 Go

Sign In and On-Site Registration (If Spots Are Still Available):

Sign In will be at the RKC II Go trailer at Bird Creek County Park on Friday starting at 12:00 p.m.  The Sign In location will move to the Pavilion at Veterans Waterfront Park at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and will end at 7:30 p.m.  Sign In will resume Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. at the RKC II Go trailer.

Participants who arrive on Thursday for the Advanced Overnight or BCU 3 Star Training will be provided a location to Sign In prior to their arrival.

Participants will need to sign a waiver and pick up Symposium information.

Linda, Dorothy, and Susan will be there to help and to answer any questions.

Pizza Veterans Park

What’s Included with Full Symposium Registration:

~ On-water Classes (Excluding the additional BCU 3 Star Training or Advanced Overnight)

Participants Provide:

~ Saturday Breakfast (Restaurants may be busy due to Farmer’s Market, plan accordingly.)

~ Lodging or Camping 
Camping is available at Port Crescent State Park, 7 miles from Bird Creek Park.  
Port Crescent fills up quickly, make reservations as soon as possible.  There are numerous small non-chain motels in Port Austin.  The Port Austin Chamber of Commerce has a list of lodging options.

~ Your own kayak and gear or arrange for rental from RKC prior to arrival.

~ Kayak Clothing (Avoid cotton and denim.)

Kayak Bilge Pump

Recommended Items To Bring:

~ Water Bottle

~ Sunscreen

~ Sun Glasses and Strap

~ Sun Hat

~ Snacks

~ Safety Equipment (Bilge Pump and Paddle Float)

~ Nose Clips (Especially for Rolling and Rescue Classes)

~ Goggles (If your eyes are sensitive to water.)

RKC 2 Go Trailer

RKC II Go:

The trailer next to the parking lot at Bird Creek Park will be the Symposium Head Quarters.  Stop by for any questions about gear, the Symposium or Port Austin.

We will also have necessities like nose plugs, water shoes, paddle clothing, outfitting items and paddle gear for purchase in the trailer.  If you know of something you need before the Symposium please let us know and if we have it available we will bring the item.

PAKS Kayak Beach Storage

Kayak Beach Storage:

Kayaks can be left on the beach at Bird Creek Park during the Symposium.  Kayaks should be pulled up from the water’s edge at the end of the day.  We recommend not leaving any gear including paddles and PFDs overnight.

Riverside Kayak Connection is not responsible for lost or damaged kayaks or gear.

Friday Night Pizza and Potluck:

Friday night Pizza and Potluck will be at the pavilion at Veterans Waterfront Park.  Pizza from Joe’s Pizzeria, salad, iced tea and lemonade will be provided.  Feel free to bring a dish to share and B.Y.O.B.  We will make a Facebook page for the Pizza and Pot Luck closer to the Symposium so everyone can share what they will bring for the Pot Luck.  Meals for non-participants friends and family may be ordered when you register for $15 per meal.

After Dinner there will be a meeting for anyone who will be going on the Saturday morning Intermediate Tour to Grindstone City, there will be an announcement during dinner for the meeting location.  At the meeting the trip logistics and safety plan will be discussed.  This will include shuttle, boat transportation, meeting location and time.

There will be a bonfire at the beach across from the pavilion at Veterans Waterfront Park.  Sticks to roast marshmallows and supplies for S’mores will be at the fire.  Feel free to bring a chair for sitting around the fire.

At 8:30 the Sunset Tour will leave from the beach at Bird Creek Park.

Bird Creek Park Pavillion

Saturday Lunch and Dinner and Sunday Breakfast and Lunch:

The meals will be served at the Bird Creek Park Pavilion.  There will be a vegetarian option for those who select the vegetarian meal plan at registration.  The caterer is unable to accommodate any other food sensitivities.

Meals for non-participants friends and family may be ordered, when you register, for $15 per meal.

Following Saturday dinner we will meet at the Port Austin Community Playhouse for the Speaker Presentation.

Bird Creek County Park Restrooms

Bird Creek Park Amenities:

There are clean restrooms in the center of the park.  The restroom building also has showers that require quarters for use.  

There is parking at Bird Creek Park, please car pool to Symposium classes if possible and only park in designated parking spots.  There will be a designated parking area on the grass for kayak trailers.  

The beach is still open for swimming during the Symposium, please watch for swimmers while kayaking.

Dogs are not allowed on the beach at Bird Creek Park.

Huron County does a very nice job keeping Bird Creek Park and Beach clean during the Symposium.

Huron County Sheriff Kayak Safety Check

Port Austin Kayak Symposium Safety:

The Safety Plan for the Symposium has been filed with the U.S. Coast Guard, State of Michigan DNR, and Huron County Sheriff.

Properly fitted PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices), with a whistle, will be required to be worn at all times while on the water.

In the case of lightening or severe weather everyone will be required to get off the water.  We will make arrangements to continue classes on land if applicable.

Port Austin Chamber Welcome Center

Lots of Activities for Non-Paddlers:

Port Austin Farmer’s Market is open Saturday’s 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. with over 150 vendors.

The Port Austin Chamber of Commerce has a lovely welcome center with information on what to do in Port Austin.

A favorite off the water activity for instructors is getting ice cream from the Blue Moon Ice Cream Shop.
