2.    venerable; eminent: an august personage.
Origin: 1655–65; < L augustus sacred, grand, akin to aug.re to increase.

Au.gust [aw-guhst]
–noun
1.    the eighth month of the year, containing 31 days. Abbreviation: Aug.
2.    a male given name, form of Augustus.
Origin: bef. 1100; ME < L Augustus (named after Augustus ); r. OE Agustus < L, as above

An annual gathering of paddlers which occurs the second weekend in August at a different location in MI each year.
In 2008 the August Paddlers met at the tip of Michigan's thumb peninsula:

This year's gathering will require a travel day on Thursday August 6th for most Board Members.
Paddle dates on Friday August 7th and Saturday August 8th.
Optional short paddle on Sunday August 9th, which will also be the return travel date.

The august local for this event will be:
Big Bay De Noc and The Garden Peninsula

More details to follow...

Mark your calendars now, and start brushing up on your Yooper talk.
Mmmmmm, pasties...

P.S.: Ooops, forgot the disclaimer... Paddlers should know their skill levels and abilities. Paddlers should have all required safety equipment and be familiar with its use. The Great Lakes may experience sudden weather changes. Dangers include heavy winds, large waves, sudden thunderstorms, strong currents, clapotis, williwaws, hidden shoals and wild dingo attacks ( Huh ). Participants agree that they are under their own supervision and sole responsibility...

[Edit] - location changed due to lack of sign ups - probably too far a drive for most. New Destination will be posted under separate thread.

No Promises on the weather... But Early August should be about as nice as it gets water temp-wise...

You don't have to swim in it if it scares you David C...  Tongue

However, I am going to try and line up some shallow shipwrecks for snorkeling around...  Cool

Was just viewing the NOAA chart for that area:
http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/14908.shtml

There are a couple of promising wrecks on the chart (one on the East coast of Summer Island, one on the East coast of Point Detour). I'll have to see what AWOIS says about them and do some other research...

Here's a link to the Park's website:
http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandtrails/Details.aspx?type=SPRK&id=417

I just noticed that on the second Saturday of August (the Sat we want to go) they have the Heritage Day Celebration.

"On the second Saturday of August the annual Heritage Day celebrates Fayette as a bustling iron smelting company town. Celebrate with period displays, food, and music."

Good Point: extra entertainment and activities.
Bad Point: may be crowded and campsites may fill up early.

Currently they are only making reservations through July 30th. Campground has 61 sites.

We still could try for this site - or we could relocate to another local park - or I can select a different area altogether...

What say you good people?
